Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
Got it down to Mike's shop a couple weeks ago, and we both had time to play today so we got busy. Took out the stock harness, cleaned everything unnecessary off the motor, hacked up the old burnt harness for connectors to build the new one, and got to soldering.
My new wireless harness. How cool would it be to stick bluetooth transmitters on all the sensors?
When you are discombobulating a harness, strict and accurate labeling of the plugs is essential.
Scavenged plugs.
Used to be a harness...
The new harness will be about 26 wires, plus or minus. That's all of them, though we're going to make the connections on the Megasquirt and be sure that everything is happy before we tidy everything up. This is going to be a much cleaner engine bay, I'm stoked for that if nothing else.
The aftermath of a wiring party...
And we finished my flatbelly mod while we were in there.
Here's the rest of what's hiding in that shop on a Sunday afternoon - lots and lots of Rich People Cars, and this is only one side of the entire garage. The Bastard was certainly out of place.

You should trade the bastard for the Cayman S.

Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
I can't make up my mind, I keep going back and forth. Elocker front and Spartan rear on my current axle width, or open front and elocker rear but 3 inches wider?
Going wider at this point would mean the IFS hub mod on top of 1.5" spacers, which would make for a mean scrub radius.

Do you think you'd ever come across a scenario where you'd need a front locker? Do you plan on wheeling trails like HTT?

Dude, I apparently need a front locker just to get up Radiator Rapids. Yeah, eventually I'd like to be wheeling trails like HTT.

I don't think you'll need it to get up Rapids. Let's pick you line a little better and I think you'll be fine.

Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
After installing the e-locker, I performed a test while on our Moab trip. I vowed to never engage the locker until I absolutely needed it. I never absolutely needed it. I engaged it twice, I think, and that was just to make sure the thing worked . Because of my 37's, I could easily climb over anything, that had a lot to do with it. If you're staying on 33's, I'd suggest a front locker since you will likely be dragging your armor on a lot more obstacles that I do. After years the years of pain I felt with a lunch box locker in the front, I will NEVER recommend anyone put one in. Now, granted, mine was a Lockrite so I can't speak to how a Spartan will perform.

Ten cent EGR delete:
I coulda used pennies, but I roll hella flush.
Also found a place for the winch control box and got the dual battery setup mostly mocked in. I think I'm going to love having that extra battery.
Pizza party next Friday night, Mike and I are going to sit down with the Megasquirt manual and map out all the connections on the board. All are invited.

Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
Nights are for research. Daylight is for tinkering. The serial connector is built, and the computer has a home. It's not waterproof, so I can't put it in the kickpanel where the stock computer lived. I decided to mount it in back of the glove box, and used some scraps of rubber to further isolate it from vibration. Next time I pull it out I'm going to go over it with some silicone anyway to at least keep the dust out.
Everything rests on where to terminate the wires on the computer now. We've got most of them, but the inputs the computer needs for timing are giving Mike fits.

Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
Been thinking on this - I know I'm going to go to wider axles, probably a RockAssault in front to match width with the '96 rear I'm getting from Ty. I was thinking I'd mod my current front axle for the elocker, but then I'd have to wait until I scored another elocker to put Ty's axle under the rear, and there's a couple other mods waiting on that axle, and the modding on the front axle would probably make it worth less when I go to sell it.
So I have a new plan - I'm going to put the 3rd gen axle with the elocker under the rear right away*. I'm going to put the third with the Spartan in the front and try that out - if I don't like it, I can always put the open third back. That will let me work on the rear quarters while I save up for the RockAssault and a front elocker.
* (where "right away" is likely approximate to "some time next spring")

Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
I've mentioned in other threads but have been forgetting to update this one, I got roadblocked with the question of how to get a timing signal from the dizzy into the Megasquirt. I got with DIYAUTOTUNE.com and they hooked me up with what they call a Zeal daughterboard, which does a bunch of things I don't really care about and one thing I do, namely modulate the signals from the crank and cam position sensors into something the MS can read. The board itself comes unassembled, which is intimidating until you realize that in addition to the instructions posted on line, the board has the location for each component printed directly on it, and each component comes individually wrapped with it's part number and it's location on the board printed on a sticker. They've done their best to turn this into a Lego set, and it's great. Of course, you don't have to solder Legos.
So I watched a couple Youtube videos on assembling PCBs and got busy, I finished assembling the Zeal board and connected it to the Megasquirt today. Sent an email into DIYAUTOTUNE just to make sure I got all the connections correct, and assuming I did the next thing to do is make the connections between the engine harness and the computer (about an hour) and then I can plug into the Megasquirt and start programming. *giggity*
So pretty.
Not pretty . But it should work.
Making connections on the Zeal board - I bought a $5 jig thing on Amazon and made another with a chunk of solid core wire and a pair of alligator clips. It's like having five hands!
Tying the Zeal board into the Megasquirt. Assuming I got all the connections correct, I can button these up in the case and be done messing with circuit boards.
