I am planning on going, but at this point work trumps all. I will probably take the Farm Toy if I can afford to register it. And if I dare drive it that far. I need to put a steering stabilizer on and see how it reacts.

Hmmm I didn't even know there were group camp spots down there....both times I've been down there we just kinda parked where we wanted and slept right by the cliff and hung out. I'll look into it a little more....milo942 wrote:I know there are big group camp sites at the wedge. Is there a specific one in mind? I might not be able to get down there till after dusk on account of the girlfriends schedule, so it would be nice to know where to find folks other than the sound of a bunch of toyota engines humming in a distance

I may be interested. Sounds pretty fun and not too difficult. Just depends on work schedule and how confident I am driving my rig. More information would be greatly welcomed!

There might be a few small spots with technical portions but all should be easily navigable especially with good spotters. As far as I'm able to see the only technical spots (if any) will be on a spur trail that you could ride with someone if you didn't feel comfortable driving. I intentionally planned it to be a fairly low key wheeling adventure and more of and expo trip to get out and see some good country.

I just bought the book "Hiking & Exploring Utah's San Rafael Swell" by Michael R. Kelsey. Should be here tomorrow. I'm excited to study up on the area.

Let me know how you like that. I have Kelsey's "Henry Mountains and Robbers Roost" and "Nontechnical Guide To The Colorado Plateau". I find them disorganized and hard to get information from.
Brad, do you have a specific route nailed down or are we playing this one by ear?

Excellent book! That's where I found some of the info for things I wanted to see on this trip.Andrew wrote:I just bought the book "Hiking & Exploring Utah's San Rafael Swell" by Michael R. Kelsey. Should be here tomorrow. I'm excited to study up on the area.

Sounds like an awesome trip, guys! Unfortunately, I'm going to be escorting some scouts out to Antelope Island that weekend. I'll have to tag along with you guys on the next one.

Right now, I only know camping for sure. I'm on the committee, so I'm going along to support the scoutmaster. And, because it's one of my fave places for I don't know what reason. I've done Frary before, up to the radio towers, when I was SM with my troop. I know I'm doing some cookin' in my dutch oven, and making a big fire. We'll see what else they have planned. One night I was there with the scouts, 3 or 4 buffalo came through our camp, just after we had got into bed. Could feel them before I heard them. Awesome!!

Sounds like a party. Just don't get lost or hurt or you'll end up meeting all my buddies out there. HahaBennamin wrote:Right now, I only know camping for sure. Also, once work slows down tonight around 3-4 am I'm planning on putting together a more specific and detailed plan for the events of the weekend. That being said what time are you guys wanting to leave on Friday to get down south? I work graveyard Thursday night so I would prefer some sleep before driving but that being said I'll have plenty of caffeine and excedrin with me.

Re: 1st Quarter club run, the Swell.
Sleep is for the weak. The earlier we leave the more time we have to do stuff!
Re: 1st Quarter club run, the Swell.
So from my house it will take is right around 4 hours to get to campsite #1. I don't know about work schedules for everyone but like Kevin said, the earlier we leave the more time we can play. If we want to stop at the MK tunnels on the way before reaching camp then I suggest we leave earlier so we can have light to enjoy and set up/cook in.
From what I know (which is not much) Brady and I are the most northern people to drive down meaning we'll be leaving earliest. We could either meet centrally and caravan or slowly accumulate people as we go south which may be easier depending on total number of caravaners.

Re: 1st Quarter club run, the Swell.
On the morning of day 2 I'm planning on waking up to see the sunrise over the wedge as the rest of you should as well. This will give us plenty of time for eating a good breakfast and breaking down camp. The road from the wedge to green river is mainly graded dirt and will go quickly but I plan on taking it slow and stopping to enjoy the scenery and visit all of the historic sites along the way, so I'm planning on a few hours spent there.
We can top off fuel and restock and needed supplies I. Green river. The two side canyons should be a short and fast drive down I70 to access so I was planning on hitting those in the afternoon which should give us some shade inside them during the middle of the day. They both are explorable and offer cool historic stuff to explore.
I plan on getting to campsite #2 (copper globe mine) fairly late depending on how much exploring we do. We can explore at night or just crash and hang out since day 2 will be fairly long no matter what. (Yay caffeine!) tentatively day three will consist of exploring copper globe and its ruins in the morning after packing up and then hopping back on the 70 and working our way back to small town civilization wether that will be via dirt road or paved is yet to be determined based upon fuel levels and time constraints.
I plan on taking my time and making sure we get to see all the bitchin stuff that we can, especially on day 2 which is why I saw wake up prior to sunrise. That and it's absolutely gorgeous to watch it down there.
Suggestions? Opinions?

Re: 1st Quarter club run, the Swell.
Just saw a post from U4WDA on Facebook. Maybe we help out since we'll all be down there?
The BLM is requesting volunteers in the Price area, show them what off-roading means to you:
"The Buckmaster Volunteer Project will be on March 28, 2015. We will be marking designated routes in this area and performing some trail maintenance.
Feel free to share this, and contact me if you have any question or concerns.

I love the idea of spending a morning with the BLM. I'd give up a little siteseeing for that.
Re: 1st Quarter club run, the Swell.
How close is that to campsite #1? Where is campsite #1?

Campsite #1 will be at the wedge. I don't have exact coordinates as of yet
