Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
On the knuckle rebuild I like the new improved tg wipers. I don't like the tg bearings though, I would use koyo or timken bearings. Make sure you keep your shims in order.

Like this, then? http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.php/yotamain/4runner/toyota-front-axle-parts/toyota-ultimate-front-solid-axle-knuckle-rebuild-kit-with-bearings-tax-krb-ultimate.html
I like that it's a kit, so I don't forget to order something.
Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
Wow, that is the ultimate rebuild kit. I don't think you meed the.brass spindle bushings.or the spindle studs, but.the rest is spot in. On my last knuckle rebuild I wasn't able to use the big Rock rings because they hit my ball gussets.
I would add the axle gusset kit too, especially the ball gusset/lower Shock mount and steering stop guasets. I would also order two diff guards.

If you just want to get it.to stop leaking, then just buy the ultimate wiper seal and reuse.your.old.parts.

This one? http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.php/yotamain/4runner/toyota-front-axle-parts/knuckle-ball-gussets.html I'll put it on my list.
I'm not a huge fan of the Trailgear diff guard. I've got one on the rear axle - I had to do some serious grinding to make it fit halfway right, and I don't like how it limits access to the fill port. I'm kinda thinking about maybe bending up my own out of some 1/2in round stock.

Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
Yeah, those are the gussets. You have to remove tour knuckles to install them, sonid do it all at once.
I agree that the tg diff guards can be a pain. There is a specific way to install them, and it works great if you follow it.
Marlin makes a super beefy guard. I've heard of guys slipping off a rock onto their diff and denting the.housing and damaging the ring gear.
All this talk of diff damage has me ready to order my own diff guard.

Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
I didn't know Marlin had one, I'll check that out. I like the look of the Rocky Road diff guard, but not the price, and if you say they're shifty I'd rather stay away.
But you don't wheel anymore...

Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
Woohoo, it's my truck! I just wish it was running .
I just heard from the bank, I have a title. And I just got back from certified auto with sparkly clean injectors. Now I'm scrambling to put the motor back together and figure out a solution for my front springs in the next two weeks.

Congrats, that's a huge milestone. Will it run with.the new injectors?

I'll know tomorrow. I broke a harness wire and need to splice that up, and I need to go get some fresh gas. I work tonight so it'll probably be tomorrow before I turn the key, but if it goes like I'm expecting it should fire right up.
Putting everything back in place went much easier than I was expecting. I'm really glad I took the time to label all the wires and hoses and take photos.

Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
Got the truck buttoned up this morning, emptied the tank and filled it with 10 gallons of fresh gas and a couple bottles of Heet, went to start it, and ... *click*.
Battery voltage is solid, and a jump didn't help. Jumping the solenoid straight to the battery stud gets me a nice solid *klunk* from the solenoid, but no crank.
If it isn't one thing it's another . Tomorrow I'll start checking power and ground connections. I have another starter if it comes to that, but I can't imagine the starter dying like that. Unless it was on it's way out anyway and didn't like the fresh juice coming off my relay I moved over. I dunno, I'll figure it out tomorrow. I pulled a bunch of stuff off and out of the way when I took the fuel filter out, I'm hoping I just forgot to put something back. I don't want to pull that starter if I don't have to - on the manual, there's clutch crap right in the way, and the '85 has a shock tower right there that the '86 didn't have too. It won't be nearly as easy as I'm used to. I hate not easy.

But I already know how to troubleshoot a starter, I don't need this particular learning.

Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
Yup. I'm cleaning and organizing the garage now, waiting for the shop to call with my head and the gasket set to show up in the mail.
Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
Thanks for posting that Moab video, Steve. It got me off my bum and into the garage, no small feat this morning.
Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
fire in the hole.
And you're welcome. The hardest part about wrenching is getting the motivation to get out there and work on it. You can do it. I'm impressed with your tenacity and willingness to do something on it every day. Still shooting to have it ready by FYTO?

If I have it running this weekend, I should have everything else done by FYTO. I don't know how I'm going to feel about driving a brand-new-to-me rig all the way out there, it's going to be a hell of a shakedown.
I really really hope to have it running and temp tags on it tomorrow, I'd like to drive it down to your place and help you with the tub.
Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
feel free to bring it down to my place, along with anything you need to do on your rig. There will be more people there than work we have. It really only takes 2 people to tub, but the rest of the guys will probably just be sitting around watching.
I'll put 'em to work on my 4runner: removing thirds and swapping them.

Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
The good news is, I've got the head off. The bad news is, I don't see any trouble. That makes me nervous.
I don't know if I can get the good head on and everything buttoned back up tomorrow, but I'm going to try.

Re: Kevin's 1985 4Runner
Looks good man. I wish I wasn't so busy all the time and could come up and help. I was planning on working on my Runner all day Friday then low and behold I found out last night that we are working a mandatory Saturday shift. So instead of wrenching I will be sleeping.
One of these days I will be able to get out to help someone else. I feel like I don't dare ask for help on my rig cause I never have time to help you guys on yours. Maybe the first of the year will slow down a skosh. Wishfull thinking I guess.
