Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
I figure if you're going to spend over $500 on a locker, you might as well lay out a couple hundred more and get a selectable. There were a couple spots this last weekend where it was very nice to be able to turn off the elocker in the wiferunner - I can't do that with the Spartan automatic in the Bastard. I vote you skip the Detroit - weld it up and leave it that way, or get into a selectable. Ox Locker makes a locker for the 44, right? I've always thought manually actuated lockers were the best.
Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
Honestly in the rear I don't care whether it's selectable or not. If I go this route I will take what I can get the best deal on! I've seen a bunch of Detroits lately for $400 or less! Most of them were upgrading to dana 60s.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
Just weld it then, and save a buck. If you're not daily driving it, you don't really need to worry about tire wear, right?
Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
The only thing I wiry about with the welded is if we go on any winter runs. I heard they are scary as shit to drive in the snow!

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
No scarier than an automatic. Sidehilling in mud or snow with the Spartan is sketchy, it'd be the same with any other automatic. I don't see a difference between the Detroit and a welded carrier there.

True that!

However driving my dad's orange Jeep with the welded rear end is a whole lot differant than it was when it had the Detroit. I don't know why but it was.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
I've never driven a truck with a welded rear, but if I had to guess I'd say that the difference was probably that the welded rear was more predictable? If I turn tight into an obstacle, it sometimes takes a second for the Spartan to go from unlock to lock, and if I'm not paying attention the extra traction halfway up the obstacle catches me by surprise. Wouldn't have that problem with a welded rear.
Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
I had a 94 Cherokee a few yrs back with a weilded rear and yes in the winter it is easier to spin out then open but Detroit lockers are the same as spool and wielded as far as selectable manual is better like a cable lock less things can go wrong. But this is my opinion and my experience take it as just that. If you weild it make sure it is welded very well in very spot you can. Bridge gaps with something. I welded the rear diff in my dads second gen for moab.and welded nuts between the teath on the four Pinons

Well my dad VETOed the weld thing. He says if you're going to do it do it right. So the plan is back to selling the Toyota axle to build the 44.

Kevin you need to get some money! I think we could make this happen right close to $550. That's a pretty good price for an e-locker axle already set up with 5.29s and new bearings!!

I'm working on it. I've blown my truck budget for the year on the swap, so I need to sell some junk or save my allowance . I'd do $550 if you throw in the harness and switch, you wanna take payments?
Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
I was planning on the harness and switch going with it. As far as I know I will have no need for them!
I can do payments if you want. You just can't have the axle until I can put the new one in!

That's a deal breaker. The goal here is to have my truck awesome and your truck not. You have to give me the axle first so I can have a front locker and be awesome.
Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
I've got AJ buying an axle so I should be able to put that toward gears, and I get a bonus in June that hopefully I can use some of it to put toward the locker. I just need to decide whether I want a used Detroit or a new Spartan. At this point the only advantage of the Detroit is I don't have to come up with a carrier.
Lets hold off on payments until I can see if I can make it happen with out then you can just buy it out right. Then I will use the money from you to buy some tires or a winch!!!!!!

Just because it seems like it's torn apart all the time doesn't mean I like it that way.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
Good news! My brain farted and I remembered that not too long ago my dad had a build dana 44 in the rear of his CJ. Well it just so happens that he bent the housing. Instead of building a new 44 he upgraded to a Ford 8.8 and still had the 44 sitting in the shop untouched! He is going to open it up and make sure everything is still in working order then we will move it over to my 44. Then when Kevin had the money to buy my axle I can pay my dad for his stuff!

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
My dad decided he wanted a new set of tires for his jeep and is going to let me Borrow to Own the ones he is pulling off! They are 35 13.50 15. About 75% tread. Problem is I have 16 inch wheels. So I need need to find a set of 15x10 inch wheels on the VERY CHEAP!!! Keep your eyes open for me!
