Here are the details on the springs. You'll notice width is the same as the first gen leafs and the length is 31 3/8 x 32 where as the Chevy 63's are 32x32 (and 2 1/2 wide). I think they would be perfect for a rear swap.

Andrew, I think I am going to see how these springs I have turn out. If I don't like them I will let you know, then If you still have those we can work a deal.

Another option for rear leafs are ford f-150s from a 87-92 2wd. They are as soft as Chevy 63 but are shorter and have more arch to them so you won't need blocks.

Great suggestion. Problem with those is an SAS on a 3rd gen last thing I need is more arch. It's going to be tall enough as is

Ty, Pick and Pull in Salt Lake has two 89 trucks and a 93. A steering box with Pitman is $55 after the core charge. Any morning you can make it up here, I'll go to the yard with you and help you pull it.
Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
Had a little time to work on the runner last week. The problem is the Runner is 2 hours away So I had to work with what I have in my garage. I figured I would get creative. I pulled my rear leaf spring pack a part, cleaned them, and painted them. I also made some bushing to convert them from a 2" bushing to a 1.5" bushing.

I have been pretty paint happy lately. I've almost got my knuckles ready and am working on cleaning up my front axle prepping it for paint!!

Underparts should be black. Painted underparts are girly.
How'd you make the bushing, do you have access to a lathe?

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
I have a good OFF ROAD buddy that works in our fab shop. The cool thing is we didn't need the lathe. The OD was the exact OD I needed. It's basically 2"x .25 wall DOM.
I was thinking the same thing on the paint, but thought I would try something different. Besides the paint will chip off and be covered with mud soon enough

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
Had a chance to work on my Mistress this past weekend. Like usual I didn't get near what I wanted done. It is hard to get much accomplished running solo. So basically I got the Oil pan swapped, which took a lot longer than I though it would. I got the frame plates welded in and the IFS box mounted. I picked up a steering box from iamsparticus on RME. I pulled the fuel tank, I really wasn't feeling welding right next to it! I also cut my exhaust out. cut it out at the CAT. now I need to decide whether to keep the CAT or not. It is way old and I'm sure its plugged so I think I will pull it. I just need to figure out how to trick the O2 sensors. It is registered in Brigham so I don't need to worry about emissions.
Next on the list is building spring mounts and getting my brother to finish setting up the axles. I've got some pretty cool plans for the rear suspension that you can look forward too!!

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
SO I need some advise!!
I have my Toyota rear end with an elocker and 5.29 gears. I also have a Dana 44 rear end that matches my front end with a Lock-right locker and I would have to buy 5.38 gears to match.
From my understanding the strength of the 2 axle are very similar. Advantage of the Toyota axle is the Elocker and I already have the gears. The advantage of the Dana is that I can match gears.
From what I've read on pirate and other sources is that the mismatch gear ratio is commonly used in the same setup that I have and causes no problems.
Whats everyone opinions. Right now I'm leaning towards sticking with the Toyota but some advise would be useful.
Kevin, your opinions will be judge based on your desire to buy my Toyota axle!!

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
rofl, that's why I stopped talking about which one I'd choose, it didn't seem proper.
I honestly would do the D44, but that's my OCD talking. I could never run mismatched gears, that'd be like having one tire different or an odd color door (hey, wait... ) . Like I said, I drove a couple trails with 4.10 in the front and 4.30 in the rear - that's only a little more different than 5.29 and 5.38, and I hated it what it did to my steering. Even if we can't make a deal, I think you should do your best to match the gears. I would rock the Dana.
On the other hand, you tend to run with Toyotas and you're more likely to find a spare rear shaft on the trail if you keep the 8" axle. But on the third hand, you've already demonstrated your infidelity to the superior brand when you decided to put that filthy waggy axle in front , so what do I know?

I decided on the waggy based on price/limited options. Basically there are not may options out there for driver drop front axles.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
So got a Little done this weekend! Not a long list but didn't work a real long time on it. Basically I got my Toyota 3rd member torn apart. I think I will stick with it just based on the fact that I have all the stuff to do it. When I pull it apart thou I found one of the adjuster nuts is shot. Effing dealership item. I think I will order one online and save a little cash. Other than that Brady spent some time cleaning my front end with a wire wheel. Didn't get any pics of it but it looks good. I spent my time getting my front spring holder built and mounted. started mounting the front springs then decided I need shorter springs. The ones I have (the ugly red ones) put the back end damn near under the tranny cross member. If any one has a set of 50" springs let me know. Did a little fender trimming and a lot of measuring. I think there will be a lot more fender trimming in the future. I didn't get many pics but will post what I have a little later.

You're just keeping that axle because you don't want me to have nice things.

Pretty much! You nailed that one on the head!
Really I could pull the trigger on a 44 with a loc right over my Toyota elocker.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
Here are a few pics of what I Brady and I did Saturday.
This is the adjuster nut that is shot. I'm having a hard time finding it online. I might have to go to Brent Brown and at least find the part number. I guess I could call Kurt.
Got the spring hanger built and mounted!
A little trimming

Wow, those tires are going to sit way forward. You're not going to have any approach angle at all!
Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
Yah! Really depending on what sorting I end up using we figured we went forward 4-5 inches! That will give me a wheel base of 110-111.

I think your 4runner is going to sit a little tall...

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
I'm going to call it "Stilts".
On the plus side, we can always have Ty be our weather forecaster. Assuming we can yell loud enough for him to hear us all the way up there.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
Yah I'm still working on that! I'm looking for a set of Springs with less arch. Right now as it sits I will be close to my 24" limit.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
I am bored of not working on my runner, so while I was in Brigham I picked up some steel to start putting together my rear bumper! My buddy at work thinks he's a master welder so I did all the cutting and he welded it together. Honestly I think I could have done just as good of a job welding it, but he had the time so I let him do it. I've still got a lot to do to finish it but that will have to wait til I get it up there to get some more measurements.
