I do have the vacuum lines undone. I will try that this afternoon.

you have to jack it up until it's within 1/4" of hitting, that bolt is super long and it takes a lot to clear that hole.

To get Steve's front diff out, we had to jack up the transmission about 1/2" or so.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
My gears showed up on the doorstep today!! BUT i'm a little pissed. I ordered them off of ebay and after verifying that they were the correct ones showed up part# ZG T8-529. I know for a fact that is the 4cyl set. The part# for the V6 is ZG TV6-529. So I need some advise (like usual). I know you can shim these and they will work so do I just use them or pay return shipping + another $30-$40 for the v6 set?
Steve how much does Carl charge to set these up? I know my dad has done them before but on a 4cyl and with the correct parts.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
Carl hooks everyone up, but he hooks some people up more. For some reason he hooks me up pretty good. Shoot him a PM and have him get you a quote. I assume the gears are going in an 8" third?
It's not a huge deal to put 4cyl gears in a 6cyl third. Do you have an elocker (that may change things, I'm not sure). If they screwed up, I say make them pay shipping back and get it right. I don't think the 4cyl gears are any weaker than the 6 cyl, but I could be wrong. Shoot Carl (Ilean) a PM and see what he has to say.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
Thanks Steve. It is the elocker third. But my understanding is the only difference between that and the non elocker v6 is the notch in the housing. It is 8" so I know the one I have will fit I just don't know how to go about setting it up. I know it requires extra shims.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
You just need a different bearing, I believe, to run 4cyl gears in a v6 diff or vice versa. Carl will know, and if he doesn't, email Zuk at gearinstalls.com, the dude is a wizard.
But if you don't need 'em right now, why mess? Call your seller and tell him he got it wrong, have him send you the right ones.
edit - where'd you get them from, Ron's Machine?

I don't know what he charges anybody else, but I doubt he hooks me up "good", and it's still a damned lot less than a commercial shop, with a better turnaround time and a better job done to boot.
Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
I just sent a message to Carl so we will see what he suggests.
I got them from Seven Springs Customs. I will see what Carl suggest then give them a call. If its not a big deal I would rather not deal with the hassle of returning them.

I must have missed it. What ratio did you go with?

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
I went with the 5.29 rear 5.38 front.
I think I'm going to at least contact the seller and see what we can do to make the swap. If its going to be a pain I will just have Carl set them up for me. He said its not a problem to run them you just need to use shims.
If I can make the swap I can just have my dad help me set them up. Price wise probably cheaper to exchange gears. Although Carl's price was really good.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
So after emailing back and forth for a while I've come to the conclusion that its not worth the hassle of trying to return the gears. Plus after paying return shipping, restock fees, shipping on the new gears, and the price differance, I'm out another $100-$120 bucks.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
So you ordered the wrong gears in the first place? Or you ordered the right gears and he sent the wrong ones? Because if he sent the wrong gears and wants you on the hook for shipping and restocking, he's off his rocker.
Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
I ordered them off ebay. And I got what I ordered. I guess when I verified I talked to a dumb ass.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
So I think I'm going to have Carl set up my Toy gears with the set I have. My dad can help me with the Dana.
Kevin, on the locked 3rd I almost had my brother talked into them. He asked my dad his opinion and my dad said with the 4.7 gears in his t-case he doesn't need anything lower. Sorry, that would have helped both of us out.
I've got the parts I need to build me a new Washer bottle and I've started to build the starter piece to my front bumper. I will post pics soon and write a tech report here on the mods.

It's been to damn cold to even work in my garage. It was -5 at my house at 10:00 this morning. I need to find me a propane heater for cheap. I could buy a new one but would rather use the money on the runner.

Any spare shop space over at US Synthetic? I think your rig could use some diamond stuff on it.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
So here is the deal... If we are going to start working on my SAS the first of next month, I am going to need to make haste in gathering parts!! I have a buddy currently working on making me some leaf spring and shackle hangers. I have the springs and axle although the axle needs to be cleaned up good and I need to put my flat top knuckles on it. I need to grab some new spring perches. I'm going to move the axle forward 3ish inches so I'm going to hold off on the oil pan swap (I will do it just not this trip). The thing I'm most worried about is the steering. Any ideas what I need to get it converted from rack and pinion? If I can get the IFS off and the Solid axle on, I can worry about the little stuff later (brake lines, shocks, driveline, ect). I'm not going to do anything with the rear until the front is done and I can see how it sits. If It sits good I will leave the coils on the rear if not I will have to convert it to leaf spring as well.
What do I need to be ready for the 2nd?

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
The guys on Pirate can be dicks, but there's no doubt that they know their junk. I love this link: http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Steering/Steering_Research/steeringresearch.htm
I'm guessing you'll need an early IFS box (will that work with your stock steering shaft?), steering arms to go on your knuckles, and a tie rod and drag link.

Re: Ty's 1996 4Runner "FARM TOY"
I've decided that I am not even near ready to start this. I need to gather a ton more parts. So as for now I am going to put the swap off until the 1st and 2nd of March. I know that's a couple months out but it gives me time to gather parts and save money. I know there are a lot of things that I am going to need so I am going to start a list. Please post up stuff that you know of that I miss.
What I know I have:
Axle
Flat top Knuckles
High steer arms
Leaf Springs
5.29 Gears
Steering box
Shackle Hangers (being built by a buddy)
Spring hangers (being built by a buddy)
Front Drive line
Shocks
Steering shaft (out of an 86 toy pickup)
Drag link (may be able to find one at the farm)
More just can't think of it.
What I know I need:
Brake lines
Shackles 4" or 5"
Tie rods
Frame plate W/ IFS box mount (Low Range $95)
Oil Pan Conversion Kit (Low Range $225)
This is where I am having trouble what else do I need?
I've got a buddy that will do almost any fab work I need. I just need to know what!

If you can use the Toyota shackles that look like the ones below (I believe mine are the 6"), then I have a set of used ones that I would be willing to trade for a sticker
