I really really like the look of this:

I think this Trailgear winch plate would make a good start:

Bend up a little tube, have Carl cut some plates to fill in the gaps, what do you guys think?

Yup. That's exactly the hybrid style I was talking about in the OP - build it from tube, and then fill in the gaps with plate.
