June 1819 Santaquin Mine Hunt
I know this is way in advance, but I would really like to do this.
Santaquin was settled around a bunch of old Spanish and Indian Mines. I have always wanted to go see if I could find some of them. Anyone want to take Thursday off and come down mine hunting with me? We could even throw up some tents up in Payson or Santaquin canyons and search some Friday as well. This should be my last furlough weekend thus the Thursday schedule.

You're getting your hours back? That's awesome!
The plan has always been full hours back by June, BUT if there market hasn't picked up it means right sizing and that means more layoffs.

Do you have a line on anything in particular, Ty? I'm doing some digging but I bet nearly everything up there has been found by post-1900 prospectors, and I bet everything they've done is "reclaimed" by now.
Here's one link, with precious little detail, I'll add more as I find it: http://utahtreasure.blogspot.com/2011/07/santaquin-canyon.html

Honestly I don't know. I know there are a ton mines on the mountain that haven't been reclaimed. I have a buddy that said he may be willing to go with us to show us the way. I would also like to go check out the refinery out on Goshen Mountain. If you follow the roads on Google Earth to where I'm told the mines are you can see what look to be holes, (I know it's hard to tell from a satellite). I will try to figure out how to pin points and mark a few. Honestly there would definitely be chance that we don't find anything and there would probably be quite a bit of hiking. But I have always wanted to go searching.

I'm down with hiking and don't care if we strike out, just trying to maximize our chance of finding a massive hoard of Spanish gold.
Are you talking about the complex you can see from US6 west of Santaquin? That's the Tintic Standard Reduction Mill, last time I was there it was gated and posted. http://www.expeditionutah.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4353&highlight=goshen+mill

Yes that's what I'm talking about. I heard it was posted to, but I'm not sure. I would have to go look. I know people still go a lot. I was thinking of tracking it from my house over the mountain!!

Holy cow, that's literally across the ridge isn't it? I'll bring my hiking boots.

That's what I'm looking for. I work with a guy that said he's been to a couple. I'm going to keep looking for more. I think it's crazy that there is so little online about them.

The road to the Tintic Reduction Mill IS gated and posted. The wife and I tried to go explore a couple weeks ago on our way back from Eureka, and found that out. We were short on time, so we didn't go hike to it, but it appeared there were others in the area (couple of parked vehicles by the gate) and on our way back onto Hwy 6 we passed a couple of cars full of youngsters that appeared to be headed that way for adventure.
Amazing that it has been there for so many years, and only in production for a few. Talk about anti-green manufacturing! Pretty amazing what people used to do to produce ore!

Aiden's scout leaders took them exploring there a few weeks ago.
