Okay so 1 more dumb question then I'm going to bed.

On my runner is my stock case top shift or forward shift? I guess my question is does the tcase shift from the tranny or the case? It is the j shift pattern.

When people are referring to top shift or forward shift cases, they're only referring to gear-driven cases (which only came from a truck/runner with the 22RE.)

Technically, your shifter comes out of your case rather than your tranny, so it would technically be top-shift. I believe all chain-driven cases are top-shift, so we just refer to them as "chain-driven" so we don't confuse them with the gear-driven cases.

haha, I don't know about tech master. I've built enough rigs to have done a ton of research and actually do it with my hands. It's fun to learn.

3rd gens ARE weird! They take a lot more work, time, and money to build big with duals, solid axles, and all that stuff. I know it's taboo, but I'm convinced that the tacomas are far better rigs for making into crawlers than 4runners. And all 79-95 22RE rigs (runners or pickups) are hands down the easiest rigs to make into serious crawlers.

See, Ty, all this mess and mucking about and money you're going to spend, when you could just buy one of those three tasty straight axle first gen's on RME right now and save yourself a grip of time and money.

Yeah I've been watching it the corner of my eye. We will see how it sits once everything is buttoned up and the weight is on the wheels.

Wow I didn't see the last set of pics. It is tall. I will have to do something different than the 3"Springs I don't want to be that tall.

it's really tough to have a decent amount of uptravel and keep it low with leafs. My buddy has a tacoma on 37's with a sas and links, and he's still super high, and he only has 2" uptravel. The oil pan gets in his way.

He has a 2.7L 4cyl and even so, he can't get it any lower.

I take it back, he may have 3-4" uptravel, but it's tall either way.

We will have to see how it turns out. I want to move the the front forward 1 or 2 inches and change my oil pan. I've seen some online that have some pretty good flex.

I wonder what their frame heights are. Those are some great looking rigs. Most flex comes from droop, not uptravel. Uptravel is particularly useful for blasting through backcountry roads. I'm sure your rig will turn out sweet.

That was the question I had. I really don't want to be too tall but I would be okay with no more than 2" more than what I have. That would put me at 5" to 6" total. It's more than I want but I may just have to deal with it.

I still think the duals will come first, unless I end up trailered back From Moab.

Well guess what!! I ended up trailered back from Moab. It looks like the SAS will come before the duals. I would like to do them together but money won't let that happen.

On the front end I only broke a CV axle but while under it we noticed that a lot of the other components are just plain worn out. I'm afraid to pull my rear third off though. I know my ring gear is shot but am afraid of what else i'm going to find. I don't know what kind of shape my locker is going to be in. But there was a whole lot of slippage. Enough that I had to be dragged out of the Golden crack and took the by pass on the golden staircase then dragged all the way through Gold Bar Rim. Literally dragged, me in neutral and dragged up and over all the obsticals.

Now I just have to decide what route I am going to go. I am going for the SAS but it is going to be fairly drawn out. I am going 5.29 gears. I figure it is going to be a dedicated OHV. It will be street legal to some degree. For those expedition type runs that we do. I am going 35's. I am going leaf sprung front with the stock set up i have on the rear, but reinforced. If I end up a lot taller in the front I will go leafs in the rear (probably 3/4 elliptical).

The question is I have a top shift case out of an 86 do I sell my waggy 44 and convert to passenger drop with 4.7 gears in the case or do I keep my chain drive and down the road build a doubler. If the locker is hammered do I sell the 44's as a set, sell my toy housing and axles, and try to find a set of 1/2 ton Chevy axles. They are the same width as my toy axles with my spacers. Or do I just use my 44's and keep the spacers. There are a lot of options.

As for now this Desert Runner is SOL.

Horrible news, man, that's a lot of carnage. What's your time frame for getting it rolling again?

I think TRD still has Carl's old '85 for sale...
