It hasn't rained in awhile so it shouldn't be muddy. There might be some patches of snow but I'm guessing there has been significant traffic in there to bust through those...

I am fearful. I thought I had it tracked down to the tcase, but I finished putting my spare case in today and that wasn't it. Transmission? Diff? I dunno.

What exactly are you hearing? After I "busted" my rear diff right after I bought the 4Runner, I heard a "ticking" sound all the way home. At first I thought it was coming from the drivetrain but I decided to drop the third. I found a ring gear that had been chipped in a couple of places. It had succumbed to the abuse I put it under running the "trinity." It was a 4cyl. third with one of those lunchbox lockers(lock rite, I believe??). After it sat for several months, I finally found a brand new v6 third with a full Detroit - I've been running that ever since.

It's an intermittent hum, louder and stronger the faster I go, when it's really bad I can actually feel it. It got really bad on our last Snakes trip, and it was the worst when I was in low range and 4th or 5th gear, that's why I thought it was the tcase. It doesn't get better or worse when I'm turning, so I don't think it's a wheel bearing, and it happens on dirt, so it's not my tires wearing down. I found a dent in the shaft where I must have landed on it harder than I thought - it's still balanced, but maybe I jacked the pinion bearing in the third?

You definitely could have hit your pinion going over that boulder when you dented your driveshaft too.

I don't see any rock scars on the flange, but it's certainly possible. It doesn't SOUND like it's coming from the pinion, but sound is funny.

Yup. No noise at all at idle or on a slow roll, I have to get up to about 25 mph to hear it at all.

My friend got a bunch but only sent me a couple, and I still need to meet up with one of the guys from UVU Off-Road Adventure Club he has pictures and movies! Very Happy

I will get a few up relatively soon, and add the others in later when I can get them.
