New guy

Hey, heard about this place over on t4r.org and wanted to sign up to start going to some trails with other people,

I have a 04 silver runner, with some beginner mods, but I'm looking to do more. I'm new to the whole off road thing. So far I freaking love taking it off road, and the wife and 2 year old love it too. They want to go weekly!

Anyway, I need to find out about some more good trails close to Layton, and learn more about 4x4 mods and what not.

I'd be down for wheeling a few times since that's not too far away. Course school needs to be in session so I'm in the state...

Yeah, I'm trying to find anything I can go on besides the bountiful b, skyline drive, firebreak road, centerville atv park and farming canyon.

If you guys know of anything like that tell me please! I've been searching and searching the Internet and havent had luck.

I don't know what you're looking for, but if you go north to Cache Valley, theres the Millvillr trail, a few trails east of Smithfield, and Green Canyon. Then near Camp Somia about 10 miles into Logan Canyon there is a ton of trails going into the mountains (dont think that gate opens until July 1st, but you can curve around the backside from Millville). Then there's also providence canyon which is fun.

I've also heard you can go from Brigham city to whatever town is south of Hyrum, but the road was closed trying to get to it for me.

You can also head to hardware ranch out of the highway going east out of Hyrum. There's some side trails and apparently a rock field aways in. You can cross all the mountains and go north to bear lake on those trails. Though it was really mellow when I went, but I only went 25 miles in or so.

What I found last semester was I just went north or south of Logan to each canyon, and half of them had trails going in. I also would just look on google maps and scroll the mountains looking for trails and go to them, if they were on private property or not a trail then I would just use my phone to find the next spot. Like you said, I haven't had much luck using the Internet to find trails.

I really really really want to get into the hills above Logan.

BrownFaux, are you just looking for stuff close to home? Skyline is about where's at unless you're will to go north or south. Down south of Salt Lake we've got Five Mile Pass and American Fork Canyon that both have moderately technical wheeling. The west desert is full of dirt roads, and if you poke around you can normally find something to make yourself nervous on. Farther south is Little Moab and Little Sahara, and then Skyline Drive picks up again on US6 and goes south through some absolutely stunning elevations and exposures. Go east far enough and you get into the logging and mining roads in the Uintahs, and there's plenty of places you wouldn't want to take a passenger car up there too. Go south far enough and you get to the Swell, then Canyonlands, and both of those are full of wheeling goodness.

Lots of the area immediately around the metro area is locked down in National Forest and Wilderness. You kinda have to get out of the valley and into the hinterlands to find wheeling opportunities. When you go into a new area, make sure you know who owns what land and verify it's open to travel before you drive it. Don't assume that it's open to travel just because it looks like a road.
