My Transfer Case Swap
Thought I start a separate thread to try and plan my upcoming transfer case swap. I think this is a good place, with input from everyone, to try and nail down a date, location and to make sure I'll have all the parts I need.
Dates:
I don't want to interfere with the possible Swell trip so I'll schedule around that and try and do it when most people are available (and when I don't have to watch my little one).
Possible dates: 11/10, 12/1, 12/8 (all Saturdays) or maybe I'll take a Friday or Monday off work and do it then.
Location:
Kevin's driveway (only if it isn't snowing)
Ty's Shop (Availability and Brigham City is a bit of a hike)
Andrew's Place (says he's got a big heater to keep the cold away and if he's still willing)
Shop space at my work (have to check with management...)
Parts:
Manual T-case
Front and Rear Drive shafts
Gear oil for T-case
Tranny Rear Main?
Misc. (container to drain old fluids, pb blaster, bolts, shop towels)
Food:
Can supply food and drink to those who help!

In...and my garage is always available. Plus, I have 4 kids under the age of 8 - you're daughter can play with them while we wrench.
Possible dates: 11/10, 12/1, 12/8 - all of these work for me.

If I can get my stuff done on my rig in time, I'll be there. I've got quite a bit to do, but I work fast.

Let's plan on Saturday, 12/8 at Andrew's place, it's closer than Brigham City.
Kevin, you're off that weekend right?

I thought you from Centerville. Brigham City is 1 minute further than Lehi

Yup. You're harshing my Swell Trip groove, though, can we do it sooner?

Im not saying we should go to Brigham you will get more help at Andrews. I would rather drive to Andrews to help, but I'de rather work on it on the lift. Just saying your not as far from Brigham City as you think.

Re: My Transfer Case Swap
Brigham City isn't terribly far for me, but it's a drive for everyone else.
Kevin, I know it's screwing with your planned trip. The best weekend for me (and when you're off) besides the 8th is this coming Saturday. If we want to do it this Saturday, 11/10, I'll work on getting my parts. What does everyone think?

Re: My Transfer Case Swap
We could do it Friday night and leave early Saturday. Or I've got Friday off, we could start early and get it done before we bolt town?
Re: My Transfer Case Swap
Is there a moab trip on thanksgiving that I don't know about?
What all are you doing? replacing a broken t-case with a new one? That's a pretty quick swap. I'd imagine you get it done in an hour or two.

Re: My Transfer Case Swap
Steve: I'm swapping the multimode t-case (push button 4wd) on my truck for a manual (j-shift) t-case. I'm also pretty sure I need to swap the rear drive shaft bc the manual t-case is shorter than the multimode one.
Everyone: Should I pick up a spare rear main seal for the tranny and just replace that while we're in there?

Re: My Transfer Case Swap
This Saturday (11/10) is a no go for me. Like I said in an earlier post let's plan on either 12/1 or 12/8 at Andrew's place. That will give me time to get the parts and time to double check to make sure I've got everything.
I know it screws up the run that has been proposed on the weekend of 12/8.
Thoughts?

Re: My Transfer Case Swap
Brady, I'll do my best to be there whenever you do it. If that means rescheduling a trip, so be it. But it sure would rock if we could get it done early and then go break it in on The Swell.
If you all wanna do it the morning of 12/1, I'll drive straight out after work. I'll hafta be home by 2:00 though, I need all the beauty sleep I can get.

Re: My Transfer Case Swap
Do you guys think I should replace the rear tranny main seal while we're in there? If so, what's involved in that process?

Re: My Transfer Case Swap
I'm not sure what's involved. I've never seen a yota tranny leak at the output shaft (but that doesn't mean much). I'd hold off.
Since it's so simple to pull the t-case, I'd say leave it alone. if it ever starts leaking, you can pull the case and address it if it becomes a problem.

Re: My Transfer Case Swap
The swap is going to be rescheduled. Keeping extra cash for our Christmas vacation is more important. I'm hoping to do the swap on a weekend in Jan/Feb when people are available.
