Bennamin wrote:Pretty good chance of snow. Not that it's a bad thing. My buddy and I were planning on taking the Varsity scouts to the dunes this weekend. He has a tow company, and a fun activity is taking a (almost dead) car out on a hauler, and let the youngsters experience driving, getting stuck, getting unstuck, etc. Plans changed when he drove out there Saturday and found that there's a foot of snow. BLM area north of Little Sahara.
Say Ben, it's a little off topic for this thread (ok it's a lot off topic), but what sort of almost dead cars does your buddy have that he'd let go for super super cheap right now? Looking for something to drive in the Gambler 500.

I will check with him. Never know what he's got around his place

Night one would be in the area of 39.511490 -114.200897
Night two 38.340767 -113.620193 (which is a cool old mine site..... but is now leveled )
and Night three could be up for debate depending on how close to st. george we want to be
That puts us on average around 190 miles a day.
Have you guys decided if you'll be camping at these locations each night?

I'd like to stay at the night two coordinates because I think its a cool site. I think Kevin has something else planned for night 1 I defer to him on that one

I have no plans. I'm doing my best to make Josh have plans because I'm tired of being the one with the plans, but he's not cooperating.

I mean, I could let you off the hook. But I'm not.
Re: Wendover to St. George on dirt
So I guess we are figuring it out when you decide on the road.
But seriously..... who's attending

I'm sittin' back and watching...
I can't get outta work that week, so I'd be looking at either driving out late Thursday night (not real appealing) or extremely early Friday morning (also not vastly appealing)... if I knew where anyone would be. And I could do it, whether it's appealing or not, but that's my only options. Or quit. But the perks are nice, so...
Oh, and it'll be before I can take a Ham test, so I couldn't use the cool new toy I have... legally

Thursday night should be at 38.340767 -113.620193 unless we leave Thursday, then you'll have to consult Kevin on camp

I haven't been to the first site, I don't know anything about it but it works for me for Wednesday night. The second site is very cool and would be an awesome place to camp. There are some more mining ruins just up the road that I've been meaning to check out so that'll be a great stop Thursday night. I don't have any way to open the .gpx right now, where did Dave stay the third night?

I wouldn't get on a busy repeater and start bellowing, but nobody is going to know or care if we're in the middle of desert on simplex. Bring the radio, and I won't tell if you don't.
Re: Wendover to St. George on dirt
Thought you wanted to get to the basin park on the first night? Thats why I was suggesting you finding something

I want to spend more time in the park then we're going to have. I'll save that for another trip.
Re: Wendover to St. George on dirt
Not particularly attached to night one camp, its just where Dave stopped. There does appear to be a small tailings pond and some sort of ruin just to the south

I'm out this one. Work has me scheduled to do some custom training for a client in Denver the following week, so I'll be doing homework that weekend.

Re: Wendover to St. George on dirt
This portion of the state is looking awful soggy, you still want to give it a go this time of year Kevin?
I'd be down for a swell, or escalante, or something trip if we want to reroute

Re: Wendover to St. George on dirt
I'm down for whatever. When we scheduled this I expected it to be dry, with maybe some snow or ice. I'm willing to slog the mud but I wouldn't turn down a trip to the Swell or Escalante or both if you want to do that instead. Should we start at the Wedge and just work our way down and see how far we get?
Re: Wendover to St. George on dirt
Wedge to Escalante sounds intriguing, especially with the weather. I can't seem to find Dempsey's simplex chart want to pick a channel incase Ben tries to come find us?

Re: Wendover to St. George on dirt
Yup. You and I should be on an empty simplex frequency, but Sinbad should have repeaters all the way down. I'll have a look once it slows down tonight.
edit - hrm, Ben doesn't have a call yet and probably shouldn't be getting on a repeater net. That'll make finding us problematic unless you want to try and nail down some campsites.

Re: Wendover to St. George on dirt
I'm assuming we are spending night one in the wedge? Which really won't matter to Ben. I've never been so i'll leave that up to you. I'll try and do some route finding tomorrow, work prevented that from happening tonight. I have a ton of crap to get done, and have a meeting with our architect, sooooo we may be winging it and advising Ben if we get some service
