Big Ridge Trail Project May 10th,11th
Hi all ,
Five years ago PLEAA made comments to the BLM concerning a trail named Big Ridge . The BLM wanted to close it as it has serious erosion problems and huge rock slides . A compromise was reached and the BLM gave five years for the trail to be cleared to get a motorized vehicle over it or it would be closed . Garfield County has not been able to do anything and no one else has either . THIS IS THE FIFTH YEAR . It's do or die for Big Ridge .
A Trail Project is cheduled for May 10th and 11th . It's a Friday and Saturday . State Parks will be there with a trail cat for three days to work the big stuff . We need lots of help . Please contact any clubs or groups that you work with as we need a lot of help . U4 has promised to work with us and I have several atv clubs I'm contacting in Northern Utah . Please send it out to your e-mail lists and everyone you know . Please see the attached maps and flier for more info . This is a beautiful area and is a great chance to get out , have fun and give back to the land we all love . Area is really remote so bring more supplies than you think you'll need . Feel free to contact me for more info .
Thanks for all your help ,
Glenn Olsen

I don't know if anyone is interested in this, but I figured I would post it up over here just in case. I haven't had a chance to look at my calendar yet so I don't know if I can go or not. I might be more apt to go if someone else on here wanted to go and I could catch a ride and split gas. Might be a fun/hard couple days.
To be honest I have no idea where this even is other than Garfield County Which is 4.5 hours from Spanish Fork. I've Googled it but can't really find anything on the trail. It would definitely be an overnighter. At least one night possibly 2.
I will provide more info as it becomes available.

Ok, got some more details. This is up Poison Springs wash/canyon, which is just a couple clicks south of Hanksville. I've been through this area, but never been up Poison Springs, and it's on my list for sure. I don't know how much technical wheeling there is, but I know it's a neat area to explore with some great scenery and history. I think we should commit to this one!

If we can get some representation, I think it would be a great way to get our little club's name out there. Put me on the "strong maybe" list.

Always a seat for you, but you might like Andrew's Tundra better .
This would be a great chance to get the club name out there, but also get to see a beautifully remote area of Utah and put in a day or two of honest labor to keep a trail open. I think it'd be awesome if we could get several trucks down there.
Somewhere in Poison Springs canyon is supposed to be a signature of Butch Cassidy carved into the rock - it's just south of Robbers Roost country so I wouldn't be surprised.

I think I'm pretty much locked in on this. I'd love to have some company though, anybody else gonna make it?

Yeah, I'm in as well.

It's a long drive down there, what time will you be free to leave?

Don't know if you've seen the latest on RME, but this would be a LONG trip. OldGeezer posted up that he left SLC at 6am and got to the work spot at 2pm - that's 8 hours...it is VERY remote. No way we can leave Friday night and expect to get there at a reasonable hour and I can't take Friday off. I don't think this will be a trip that makes sense for me - hopefully the guys down South can handle it and keep this trail open.

Re: Big Ridge Trail Project May 10th,11th
Leaving Saratoga Springs around 3:30 we can easily make Poison Spring Canyon before dark. I'm thinking we camp there and drive the rest of the way in the next morning.
Re: Big Ridge Trail Project May 10th,11th
I'm in the same boat as you Andrew. No way I can leave earlier on Friday. If we leave Spanish Fork at 4 that would put us there around midnight. Any ideas how far camp is from the work site? He said it's 2 hours from Poison Springs to the river then another 2 then another 2 to the work site. But where is camp from there?

Where they're camping is right at the base of the switchbacks we'll be working on. We wouldn't make it that far in Friday.
Re: Big Ridge Trail Project May 10th,11th
I still have to check with the boss but I get permission :face: then I would be up for the LONG trip.

Re: Big Ridge Trail Project May 10th,11th
Andrew, what time can you break free?
It's about 4 hours from my house in Magna to Hanksville. The turnoff to Poison Springs Wash Road is mebbe 15 miles beyond that, so even if we didn't leave until 4pm, we'd still hit dirt with plenty of time to head in and find a spot to set up camp. Also, that dude says it took him 2 hours between leaving the pavement and hitting the Dirty Devil crossing, but that's only 16 miles, I bet that doesn't take us near as long.
I really think we'll have plenty of time to get to dirt and get headed in before setting up camp for the night, and then I figure another hour and a half the next morning before we hit the switchbacks where the work is. This isn't going to be as long a trip as Old Geezer on RME thinks it is.

I'll plan on leaving straight from my work in Lindon. I'll have the truck so I can carry all the equipment and Ty's beauty supplies. I have a couple of shovels, and a pick I'll be bringing. Should I just meet up with you guys somewhere in Santaquin? I could leave anytime after 2pm.
