It's about time I start my first build thread. I have thought about starting one on T4R.org, but recently I have found I spend more time on this site.

Anyway here she is. I bought her up in Layton about one year ago as a graduation present to myself (that's how I justified it to the wife). Took about two months searching for the right one.

Here she is the day I got her.

Chris' 99 T4R Empty Gooseberry

Post by Vitruvius Wed Feb 13, 2013 10:18 pm

Last weekend I took a little trip down south to St. George and Gooseberry Mesa. Had a blast as anyone would down out of the snow and cold weather.

For those that are familiar with Gooseberry, we started on the north rim and rode out to the point and then rode the south rim back. Along the way we had one blown tire, a busted chain, and several wrecks. It was a blast!

Chris' 99 T4R Empty Shootin'

Post by Vitruvius Wed Feb 13, 2013 10:30 pm

Once we got back into town from Gooseberry, we decided to go shooting. First time shooting an AR-15. Pretty fun way to end a great day.

Its the Lenses that make the biggest difference I think. I really want an Nikkor 18-200mm lens, I borrowed one once and it was freaking awesome, but I don't want to spend 600 bucks on a single lens. I have been thinking about getting one of those 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 lenses, the 1.8 is more my price range just wanna try one out sometime.

Here's a photo I took back in the day when I lived in Stansbury Park, it was taken for a photography class (analog camera, SLR not DSLR) during architecture school. I used a polarized lens and Black and White film. Anyone know where this is?

I love the photos you take!! I bought a Nikon D5100 last fall. I love it but really need to learn how to maximize its potential. Usually I just use my little point and shoot Nikon but really want to learn how to take Vitruvius quality pics.

You gotta get a 50mm lens, those things are sweet! the 1.8 is pretty cheap too. But yeah man, nice shots! Was that picture you took of my rig with your nikon or was that a phone pic with some kind of effect?

Tyson, thanks for the high praise.. The one thing that helped me learn how to use my camera was changing it from 'Auto' to 'Manual'. The D5100 looks pretty sweet, I think you got a great camera there. My biggest complaint with DSLRs is having to pack them around. Still haven't figured out a great way to take them on camping trips or hiking. Even last weekend snowshoeing with one was problematic.

Gottabe, it was with my Nikon, my cell phone is crap. My wife actually washed it a few days ago in a load of laundry. I put it in a bag of rice for a few days and now it is starting to work again. As for effects, the only thing I remember doing to the photo was adding your name as a cast shadow on the ground.

Chris' 99 T4R Empty Rock Sliders - Design

Post by Vitruvius Sat Feb 23, 2013 9:25 pm

So since it was snowing today and my wife had a girl's day with some friends, I decided to start sketching up ideas for sliders. Here are a few of my ideas,

68" long, tight to the body with a slight angle up.

60" long, nothing too special.

68" long with 2" square tubes just in case I can't find access to a pipe bender.

These are still pretty rough concepts but I wanted to get started. If you guys have suggestions, I don't mind hearing them.

I like the first ones, but I'd do four legs instead of three if you can.

We can always find you somebody with a bender, don't sweat that.

Going to start them this week. I am headed up to SLC Wednesday or Thursday to pick up the steel. It looks like the raw materials will be less then 100 buck. I will keep you all posted on what I decide to do.

I will see about a fourth bracket/post coming off the the frame, but from what I have seen online, most end up with only three. I would like the extra connection to the frame if there is room. This will be a learning process for me, but a project I am excited to start.

I still haven't decided exactly which one I will go with, I like how stout the square tubes will be (considering torsional forces and all). Aesthetically, the pipe tubes fit the design of the 4runner better IMO.

Alright, so here is where I am at on these sliders, I was going to head over to Metal Mart this afternoon, but then I decided to actually do some measurements on my truck and I realized that a 68" slider was way too long, so I measured from front wheel well to the back, it was 64" total. I decided to do another iteration of the sliders (see video).

took some images and quickly (I mean 5 minutes, quickly) and photoshopped them on to a photo.

Anyway, any suggestions? I think I am going to pick up the steel tomorrow during my lunch break (Metal Mart closes at 5PM).

I think they're sticking out too far in the first photo, I don't think you want them any further out than the door panels at the handle, and probably not that far.

I think its partly due to my photoshop job that makes it look like its sticking out so far. But i do agree that the first photo makes them seem like they stick out so far. I do plan on having them closer to the body and hopefully with a slight slang upwards.
What do you think of the kick out, instead of the rounded piece from the previous ones?
