Old School Rock Crawl
I have a crazy idea. Who wants to put a rig in the Old School Rock Crawl?
I'm serious. I just happen to have a half-stripped '86 4Runner in my driveway that I'll donate to the cause. We'd need to finish gutting the inside, find a motor and front diff (or find a cheap axle and SAS it), and weld up a cage. And we'd have to spend a day rattlecanning it some hideous paint scheme so EVERYONE knows we're coming.
What do you guys think?

I have a 1 ton rear Dana 60 and a front dana 44. Fill width. When is the OSRC? How much time do we have?

I also have access to an AMC 360. I don't know what it would take to get it running though.

Dude.

Memorial Day weekend. If we could source everything we need and get everybody together at once, we could probably put the truck back together and have it ready in 2 or 3 weekends. 4 or 5 if we decide to SAS it. We'd have to look into that, I don't know if the SAS would disqualify us for Street Stock class and I don't see any need to aim higher than that our first year.
Re: Old School Rock Crawl
The SAS wouldn't effect it as much as the full width axles. I would volunteer my front dif but it's the wrong drop.

There's no requirement about axles, but the suspension has to be "stock configuration". We'd be going from torsion bar/control arms to leaves, which might bump us up a class. I sent Craig a PM, I'll see what he says.
It would be cheaper and less work to keep it IFS, also. Plus I have a bunch of spare CV shafts.
Re: Old School Rock Crawl
YES, YES, YES! Count me in.
*EDIT: We could use my 4Runner as well. The SAS might bump it to the Legend class, though.

Anyone have a line on a front diff for Kevin's runner. I think I'm more worried about finding a motor.

Re: Old School Rock Crawl
I talked to Craig - a 1st gen 4Runner with an SAS can stay in Street Stock, but there'd be a 10 point penalty for not using OEM springs.
Andrew, have you looked at the rules? What would need to be done to get your beast ready?

If it comes to it, we can get a knocking motor from a yard for under $300 probably, and between it and my busted block maybe piece together a decent motor. I'm more worried about the diff - one from a wrecker will be almost as expensive, and then we'd still need to find gears.
I really like the idea of
If we're serious about this, when can we all get together and rough out a plan?

I approve of this message. Can you run 4.7 t-case gears and stay in this class? What about welded diffs? I think Stratton's red 4runner would be an awesome contender too.

Re: Old School Rock Crawl
4.7s would rock, but unless somebody has $600 in their pocket for the inchworm adapter to run it behind the automatic, it ain't happening. 5.29's and the auto will have to do.sixstringsteve wrote:I approve of this message. Assuming we can find 5.29 for the front diff.

Re: Old School Rock Crawl
Here is my main concern with the project. I really don't want to put much money into it. We all have our own rigs that need work. I can't afford to build 2 rigs right now. I could try to get donor parts but coming from a jeep family it might be hard.

Besides the truck itself, I can afford to pitch in a little cash, but money is absolutely a concern. That's kinda why I think we need to get everybody interested in one place, so we can hammer out things like that and decide if this is a club project we can all work towards, or if we should just help Andrew get his truck ready instead. If we're serious, we can always talk to some of the local wheeling companies and see about a semisponsorship, getting donor parts or services like gear setup in return for their name on the truck, that could save us some money for sure.
I really really like the idea of rebuilding the '86 as a group. It doesn't just have to be for OSRC, we can run it at the Lucas regionals at MMP or anywhere else we can drag it, and besides, I don't think I've ever heard of a club that has a loaner truck.
But we need to have a sit down first, decide what direction we wanna take this and how far.
Re: Old School Rock Crawl
I love the idea of doing it. Like I said money to me is the only issue. If we can get some sort of sponsor that would be awesome.

Let's sit down and talk about it. I'm sure Kevin and I will chat about it tomorrow. I think the idea of a loaner truck is kind of cool!

Re: Old School Rock Crawl
Dunno if you guys are seeing the offers in the thread I started on RME - $100 bucks for a motor and diff and carcass that we can sell for $100 sounds like just our speed.
Re: Old School Rock Crawl
Yeah I saw that. Andrew has a trailer we can use doesn't he?

Re: Old School Rock Crawl
If I could get my dad to bring his trail down I would have one. Every time I get up there to get it he haven't had time to fix the lights. If it were day time IDE just take it and fix them my self but it hasn't been and I haven't had time to do it up there.
Has any one talked the 83trailblazer about it? I would be willing to help pick it up. Like he said its pretty parted out but we could see what we could salvage.

Re: Old School Rock Crawl
Anybody have a good enough relationship with low range, Kurt, 4wheel parts, or any other offroad shop that they would have a shot at getting us a sponsorship? I could ask my dad if the dairy would sponsor some cash. They would donate parts but I'm the lone toyota. We should also hit up some graphic shops and se if we could get some sweet logos.
Speaking of logos. I still have Andrew and Steve's. Steve I assume you don't want white anymore? Kevin I am still trying to get your 12" one and i have a white 6" for Nicole's rig.

I think once we have a plan it's definitely worth talking to folks here and there. I know Davy and Skippy at AllJeep, they might be willing to kick in parts or service in exchange for plastering their name on the rig. Might be worth talking to UFAB and LowRange too, tho Low Range might be out of our league just yet. Ditto for CruiserOutfitters, Kurt is a good guy but he's a big enough setup that he probably wouldn't be interested in having his name on a beat up truck driven by a crew of noobs. Couldn't hurt to ask him of course, but don't hold your breath. TrailRidge would probably be willing to make a deal, but I don't know if we want to hitch our wagon to that outfit.
I'll pm 83trailblazer and ask him not to do anything hasty with his parts truck. Brady says he might have the hookup on some tube for a cage, so all that's in our way is somebody to bend the tube and, a 5.29 ring and pinion for the front, and somebody to set it up.
How is everybody for next Saturday morning, get together for breakfast somewhere and hash this out?
