Touring the Swell and Escalante
Josh and I left town Wednesday morning and made a bee line for the Wedge (with a minor detour when Josh tried to get me lost in Price). From the Wedge we headed south on Buckhorn, stopping at the major attractions as Josh hadn't been that way before. We crossed I70 and intended to visit Tomsich Butte before camping at Temple Mountain. On a whim we drove to Hidden Splendor and after spending an hour or so hiking around we decided to camp there instead. We had a crazy windstorm that night, but no rain or snow. After getting up in the morning we hiked some more, then jammed out for Temple Mountain. More hiking and a little four wheeling, then we exited by Goblin Valley and made for Hanksville, where we fueled up. Catching the Notom Cutoff we drove south, climbed the Burr Trail switchbacks which are always fun, then we drove a portion of the Wolverine Loop south of the Burr Trail. We managed to get off the dirt before dark, so we camped at a little developed campground buried in a ravine along the Burr Trail. The break from the wind was worth having to pay for a site. My POS Ford had been idling funny and a little down on power for the second half of the day Thursday, and that continued as we drove out the Burr Trail headed for Boulder. It finally threw a code about a mile from Boulder, so we pulled over in the parking lot at the Boulder Grill and popped the hood. We found a possible vacuum leak on the intake manifold, but in the process of cleaning the air filter I broke the cone off. Oh crap. We drove down to Escalante hoping the NAPA down there would have a filter in stock. They didn't, but they did have some epoxy so we glued the filter back together and headed back north. With the truck being suspect we decided to skip Capitol Reef and head around to Copper Globe on pavement, but it was still driving weird when we hit I70 and I didn't want to put Josh in a position where he might need to strap my beast out of Copper Globe, so we just came home.
Pics coming.

At the Wedge.
Rusted iron in the Swell. This would become a theme.

Great light.
High cliffs at Hidden Splendor meant we would lose sunlight early.
Mining relics.
My chair cost more than my tent, and takes longer to set up. Am I doing this glamping thing right?
Shack and adits at Hidden Splendor.
No drivetrain or interior, this old car was stripped before a flash flood left it sitting like this.
Not even a frame left under this old truck, just the body panels.
You cannot find a bad view in the Swell.
Looking down from an abandoned tipple at Temple Mountain.
Bad Air.
Had to put it in 4WD once or twice.
If our trucks were a band, this would be the album cover.
We skirted several rain and snow storms, but never got caught.
The views in GSENM aren't bad either.
