Re: CB vs. ham radio
Dempsey would like anybody coming to contact him and let him know your call sign and what kind of radio you have, if either.
Re: CB vs. ham radio
Thinking about going to the test session tonight to give it a try

And failed miserably. Me too, I think I got just barely better than random chance.
Congrats!
Re: CB vs. ham radio
I got 15 right, considering I had confidence in about 3 of my answers I thought it was pretty good. But yeah, 98% of the general test was greek to me.

They haven't set a date yet, is why I bring it up. If anybody wants in and has a preference for which day of the week, speak up.
Okay, okay... I went and got my account.

More of the same: http://utahvhfs.org/simpfreq1.html. These fawkers sure have a lot of rules.
We're all dual band capable, let's make 447.800 our default simplex freq. That should almost always be empty.

KI7 JNN - by the way. I've basically only used my radio out snowmobiling in the backcountry so far. Really useful, and a whole lot cheaper than what most of the snowmobiler community buys. Those BCA Link setups are like $150 each. Here's a pic of my Baofeng uv-5r 2+ in my backpack. The whip antenna fits through the headphone port, and the mic runs through the hydration sleeve on the shoulder strap. I've been really pleased with it so far.

Kevin... I know you have SOOO much free time, but did you get a list of freq's to program? You said something about a programming party, but I, too, am a tech junky, and have received my USB connector to program my HT. I'm just not too sure about what frequencies to program into it...
(Edited) I passed Technician tonite! And failed/guessed horribly on General

I'll do a handheld unit for now. Will probably upgrade to a mobile unit eventually.

Congrats
I haven't programmed much in mine yet, but I was planning to program both repeater networks in the state that Dempsey gave us. So if I was ever in a pinch I could try and raise help on those. Other wise, I'm also not sure what to program, maybe 146.520, and 447.800

Re: CB vs. ham radio
I have the programming cable and Dempsey's Chirp file, which looks to have eighty-some-odd repeaters programmed. I have no idea what or where most of those repeaters are. If you guys want to get together somewhere and program our HTs that's cool, or if you already have the programming cable then you'll need to DL the Chirp program and I can email you Dempsey's file. I'd offer to let you use my file but since it looks exactly like Dempsey's right now there's really no point .
There's two major repeater networks in the state, the Intertie which is basically up and down the I15 corridor, and the Sinbad network which covers the Swell, Moab, Escalante, etc. There's other smaller nets, but at a minimum you'd want to have all the repeaters in those two nets programmed.

That looks like a cool setup. Are you using the stock earpiece or did you find something better? I tried the stock one and wasn't happy with it at all.
Re: CB vs. ham radio
Here's a cool link if you guys haven't seen this yet: http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/pdf/uv-5r_v1.0-annotated_by_KC9HI.pdf. It's the operators manual, improved and englished by the guys at Miklor.
I was looking for a way to get these little Baofeng radios to automatically find the nearest repeater, instead of having to manually try each frequency. Low and behold, there it is, Chapter Five - Scanning. RTFM, dumbass.

I bought this mic/speaker for about $5.00 on Amazon. I've liked it a lot actually. You can get the waterproof ones, but they were about 3 times the cost at the time. I figured I'd try this one out for now.
I also bought an aftermarket in-ear kind with the clear tubing, because it was super cheap and now I can dress up as Burt MacKlin, FBI Agent, but more seriously I thought it would be good for hunting. But I haven't used it nor the one that comes with the radio yet.

Nope, super secret squirrel motorola connectors, they are like twenty pin.
