Opinions please

Post by TRD270 on Wed Apr 20, 2016 4:19 pm

So I've been considering getting rid of the Tacoma and picking up a Raptor..... I wanted a Raptor when I bought the Taco but they were still really expensive. There is one currently for sale at a "reasonable" price. Need opinions either way if this is foolish or not. I only put about 5k miles a year on my rides so fuel economy isn't a super concern, neither is the daily driving aspect. Most of the miles are following Kevin around somewhere or solo camping trips because of my shitty days off. I love most everything about my Tacoma with the exception of two things.

The Tacoma is dreadful to be in bumping down dirt roads all day. The seats just flat out suck ass. I'm also a little cramped being a larger fellow. My second and biggest complaint is the lack of power and that awful 4 speed auto. Its terrible on long hauls with hills and such. I've considered putting a SC on it, but i'm worried I'd blow up the transmission or motor by throwing forced induction on it at 210k. Not a big deal, but lots of money. I love the size for trails and the capability. My biggest concern for the Raptor is the size. The majority of what i'm doing no days is bombing down dirt roads which is exactly what the Raptor is good at. Occasionally I jump on a slightly more technical trail where the width could be an issue. That being said if a group run is on a said technical trail I have no issue riding shotgun with someone willing to let me ride.

I was just about to start throwing some cash at the Tacoma with parts, but wondering if this may be a better option.

Sell the Tacoma and get the Raptor. I've always thought they were awesome trucks and with you not having to DD it you'll keep costs and wear/tear down. And you made a good point, our group has shifted more towards dirt road exploring as opposed to rock crawling.

Also have the wife's 84 I could start fixing up if the need to crawl arises

We've only shifted to the dirt road stuff because Brady and I won't stop f*cking around and get our rigs running so I was iffy on your idea, but this is a good point. Get the Raptor and steal your wife's 4Runner for gnarlier stuff.

Hell, with the Raptor in your driveway you could ditch the Dodge. Is it permissible to put a camper in the back of a Raptor? Very Happy

That would make it a Captor!

Car gods made my decision for me, someone from California put a deposit on the truck last night. Ohh well. With the new ones coming out later this year, hopefully this will be a trend of price drops and some more in my range will come around.

Was to busy with other stuff to make it down before work today, I did call and it is still available. I'm going to try and take a look at it Monday before work.

Well Raptor 2 was a highly abused poorly maintained pile of doody, and i'm pretty sure at some point someone got it stuck in a water hole or it had been in a unreported flood. I do expect nothing less from shady auto though.

I know with any used raptor there has to be an expectation it had been abused in the desert at some point in its life, but that one was bad...

Would you be selling the Taco should you find a Raptor?

I haven't decided yet. The Taco or the Dodge would have to go, but I would have a hard time getting rid of the Taco until I know the Raptor was going to work out. Hard to find a Taco in as good of shape as mine, that hasn't been owned by 17 people

Well I think I'm just going to keep the ole' Taco. I'm enjoying the nearly debt free life. To reinforce the keeping of the Taco I put some new shoes on it, and just ordered some sliders.
