Catalytic Converter Empty Catalytic Converter

Post by Vitruvius Fri Sep 18, 2015 12:20 pm

So this happened at the office today:

Untitled

It scared the snot out of me, almost gave the old guy next to me a heart attack when I started it up to head out to lunch.  This happened in my work parking lot during the day!

That sucks. You're going to have another heart attack when you price out a new one.

Well my deductible is 100 bucks.  The Salt Lake PD can't really do anything.  filled out a police report on-line but that kind of felt useless.

I haven't looked too much into the price for a new one, did a quick google search and one or two came back around 200 bucks.

who knows, maybe I should just replace the whole muffler system now.  running without the converter really defeats the T4R being a hunting rig.

Maybe I should look into a Cat lock or something similar.

Check with Main Street Muffler, they put a "performance" cat on my ladies 84 with an LC Engineering motor. I don't think the price stung to bad, but it was years ago. I've had several things worked on since, always treat me right and get it done fast.

So got my 4Runner back tonight. The mechanics welded in a new catalytic converter. Drove home and about three hundred feet from my house the engine died. I don't think it was the battery or anything electric cause all the lights and radio were still on. I decided to turn the engine over again, it started back up just fine but now I am worried this will happen again. Any ideas? I will be calling the shop first thing tomorrow.

Give them a call, but they're probably just going to look at you funny. There's not much they could have done to cause that, except maybe jack up your wiring harness and make something short to ground, and you'd spot that if you crawled under and looked.

Trucks do stupid shit sometimes, and they seem to like doing that stupid shit right before a big trip. I wouldn't worry about it unless it does it again.

Well I drove her for the five minute commute to the frontrunner station in AF. Hasn't stalled this morning yet. I guess I will take her for a longer drive tonight to see if it fails again. as for a grounding issue, should I just check the two sensors at the front and back of the catalytic converter? Any others I should look at? Not sure what I would see if it is a grounding issue. Hopefully it is something obvious so I can feel more confident driving all the way to Moab tomorrow.

Well, if the muffler shop messed something up, it'll be obvious. Melted wiring loom will be your first clue, and it'll be near where they were putting the new cat in. If you don't see anything, don't sweat it.

I'm always hypersensitive to anything my truck is doing on a road trip, and it doesn't help any when the damned thing is actually acting up. Unless it does it again, try not to freak out. If it does it again, start the truck again and keep going and try not to freak out. Smile

Well at least if something does go wrong, you'll be with guys that know a little about 4runners. Not sure if that's comforting at all or not.

True, as long as it makes it down there. I guess tomorrow night will be a good test ride and if nothing happens on the way down there, I should feel pretty good about it.
