Snowbird expansion in Mineral Basin, send letters today!
This is late notice I know, but better late than never I hope. Snowbird is seeking to place an avalanche cannon and do road improvements in Mineral Basin. I don't know exactly what that entails, but I guarantee nothing good for anybody that enjoys that canyon as it sits. I envision the Mineral Basin trail being graded and "improved" so that Snowbird can service their avalanche cannon, and then once it starts getting vandalized they'll make the FS gate it off completely.
There's more info here: http://www.expeditionutah.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4802, but long story short, today is apparently the last day to submit comments. According to a post in that link:
Note that electronic comments "must be submitted in rich text format (.rtf) or Word (.doc or .docx) or .pdf", not just an email. Anybody who has five spare minutes today, let's get comments submitted and let the FS know that we really don't want Snowbird messing up that canyon any more than they already have! It doesn't have to be much, just a couple sentences indicating that you like AFC the way it is and don't want to see any development will help.

The Forest Service is considering authorization of these projects and has sought public comment via a scoping notice post-dated April 17, 2015, and a “request for comments” in The Salt Lake Tribune on April 22, 2015. The comment period is open until May 15, 2015 and below is the information on how to provide comments:
Written, facsimile, hand-delivered, oral, and electronic comments must be received by May 15, 2015. Written comments must be submitted to: Pleasant Grove District Ranger, 390 North 100 East, Pleasant Grove, UT 84062. The fax number is (801)785-6932. The office business hours for submitting hand-delivered comments are: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday,
excluding holidays. Oral comments must be provided in person at the address above during normal business hours, via telephone at (801) 733-2660, or at an official agency function (i.e. public meeting) that is designed to elicit public comments. Electronic comments must be submitted in rich text format (.rtf) or Word (.doc or .docx) or .pdf to comments-intermtn-wasatch-cache-saltlake@fs.fed.us.

Kevin, what are you getting at in your response? I never quite know what to say in things like this.

Re: Snowbird expansion in Mineral Basin, send letters today!
I wrote a pretty long and passioned comment , but here's some highlights:
Mostly, it's enough to describe how you use the canyon, and how proposed development impacts that use. Your comments don't need to super eloquent or full of research, they just need to be comments. They'll be read, but mostly they'll be one more tickmark in the "comments against" column, and that column needs all the tick marks it can get.
- American Fork Canyon is the most accessible among the undeveloped canyons along the Wasatch Front, and gives hundreds of thousands of yearly visitors the chance to find uncivilized land only thirty minutes from their homes.
- Further development by anybody, including Snowbird, detracts from the wild character of the canyon.
- There are very few areas that preserve the mining history of the Salt Lake area as well as American Fork Canyon. That preservation is valuable, and development threatens it.
- American Fork Canyon and it's network of primitive roads is unique among the Wasatch Front canyons, most of which have travel and recreational use tightly controlled. It should be left as it is, and not allowed to be turned into "Little Cottonwood South" by the ski industry.

Momentum is gathering. Could be too little too late, but if we do nothing it's DEFINITELY too late. Check out https://www.facebook.com/ProtectAmericanForkCanyon, it's got contacts for news agencies and politicians and FS officials who need their in-boxes obliterated by us. Let's bring some pressure!
