The dreaded Axle Seals on my '86
Hey guys, as I mentioned a few days ago in my rig thread my rear axle seal on my passenger side has completely died. I was looking on RockAuto.com for the parts I need buuuut the problem is I don't know exactly which parts I need!! Anyone know a good write up for the 1st gens on this?
I found this one: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/rear_axle/oil_seal/
But I dont know the exact parts I need as there are many versions and variants. Any help on parts ID would be immensely appreciated!

Axle seals are easy. Pulling the axle is just 4 bolts, brake line, ebrake cable, and then slide it out. Yank the old seal, drive the new one, put it all back together.
I wasn't aware of any difference in seals. I expect you just need to tell the fellow at NAPA the year of your truck and you'll be good to go?

I'm not super familiar with the Toyota axle seals so correct me if I'm wrong, but most other axles have 2 seals, an inner and out. As bad as it looks like its leaking most likely both will need to be changed and if anything like the Dana 44 you will have to remove you 3rd member to get to the inner seal.

Yeah I did see stuff about inner and outer seals which definitely added to my lack of surety on the whole subject! Ill be hitting NAPA today and hopefully they'll know what I need for seals!

The seal you want is at the end of the axle housing, and you'll be staring right at it after you slide the axle shaft out. That's the one that's leaking.
My fsm doesn't say which is inner or outer - I assume it's the inner you want.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no seal inboard of the axle tube. There's one seal at the outside of the axle tube, and another that caps the wheel bearing on the axle shaft.
Once I'm not feeding a baby I'll post some screencaps from the fsm.

Thanks for the FSM post! I called NAPA today to check to see if they had my seals and apparently theres two types. Seals (Inners and outers) for a full floating axle and a "regular"? I have noooo idea what these have on them. Any ideas? Im hoping for full floating as they have those in stock haha

A floating axle means that the weight of the truck rests on the wheel bearings and axle housing, and the shaft just "floats" inside the bearings and transmits power to the wheel. Yours is not a floating axle - the shaft supports the weight of the truck. I think your NAPA guy is confused because to the best of my knowledge no version of the Toyota 8" is a floating axle (maybe the dually axle?).
Do you have a dealer? It's a common enough truck that your dealer parts counter might have on one the shelf.

My dads 90 has the same problem and we replace the seal in the housing and it still leaks it is the outer one and you have to press the bearing on and off.
