Chad's 98 4Runner
Well I decided if I was going to do any type of build thread, I might as well do it here. Less people to make fun of me. Anyways, like I said in my introduction, I've sold my 86 turbo:
I had a love/hate relation ship with the turbo. I bought it about 5 years ago with a blown turbo and later found out the frame was bent pretty bad. I dumped a lot of money into the turbo getting it back on the road. I already had a 85 4Runner that I was parting out, so once I found out the frame was bent on the turbo, I started making plans for a frame swap. 3 more years down the road and I still hadn't had the time to do the frame swap. I started to realize that I would rather buy a newer rig that I didn't have to dedicate so much time to and something I could trust more than the turbo. So I slapped the turbo up on KSL for a ridiculously low price. I'm a stupidly honest person when It comes to selling things, so I had to post that it had a bent frame even though it drove fine and 90 percent of the people out there would never know.
It sat online for about three weeks with very few calls before my buddy called up wanting it. I ended up selling it to him for $1800 after I stripped all the stuff out of it I wanted. Then the search was on for my next toy...

Re: Chad's 98 4Runner
We own a 00 4Runner that my wife drives:
I've always loved how the 3rd gens look and how dependable they are. 2nd gen was out of the question with the 3.0 or really underpowered 22re. I had thought about building the 00, but I just didn't want to start off with something so clean. I wanted something a little rough around the edges. I didn't want to stress about the body when I go out to have a good time in the hills.
About an hour after I sold the turbo I found my new ride:
98 Limited for $1800. She was in pretty rough shape with 140k miles and had just been rear ended. The next day I packed the kids up and headed down to Salt Lake with a friend to scope it out. Upon arrival things looked pretty grim. The driveline was sitting in the back seat, and the interior was pretty dirty. I decided that for $1800 it was still worth a shot. The salesman showed up and we started going over it. Upon closer inspection, it looked like they had removed the driveline to tow it. We fired it up and it sounded smoother than my 00. Good sign. We checked all the fluids which all looked brand new and super clean. 2nd good sign. I ended up climbing under it and bolted up the driveline, and sent my friend on a test drive. I told him that he was the one that would be driving it home, so he had better make sure it would be fine. Came back and said it drove and sounded fine up to 90mph. Good enough for me!

I love the silver on white, I think that's my second favorite paint scheme on the 3rd gens.
Re: Chad's 98 4Runner
Well I had about 45 minutes into my next post and my damn laptop did something funky and erased all that I had typed. So I got pissed, and went out to work on the 4Runner. This ended up with me getting more angry once I found out I need a ball joint press to get my upper a-arms installed.
Lesson learned:Read instructions so you have all the tools available, especially when you have a very small amount of time to work on your rig.

Re: Chad's 98 4Runner
Time to finally update my build thread after the last time pissed me off and I've given up for the past while.
Right off the bat, before I had the rear hatch replaced, I ordered a Toytec Boss lift, 1" body lift and Light Racing uca's.
I lucked out for the most part on the hatch. Before I bought this 4Runner I got a hold of a friend that had a wrecked 3rd gen he had bought as a donor for the motor. He hooked me up with all the rear end parts I needed for a screaming good deal. I got the hatch, bumper, rear flares, tow package, steering wheel, tail lights, roof rack pieces and a bunch of other stuff for $350. The hatch was in immaculate condition, only downfall was that it is grey and my 4Runner is a light tan. After about a week of on and off swearing, drilling, wiring, more swearing, hammering, I got it on.

Re: Chad's 98 4Runner
At the same time I was trying to decide what size of muffins I wanted to run. I came from a history of running wide tires on my old Ford and Toyota pickup. I was sick of fighting death wobble on the Ford and fix it tickets from the Highway Patrol, so I decided I would go skinny and see how I liked it. I figured at the very least, I would get better road manners and possibly better mileage, so started my hunt for a used set.
So while I was searching for a set of used tires, I began installing the lift
Everything was going smooth till I went to install the panhard drop
Right off the bat I thought they screwed up on the bracket, but after looking at a ton of pictures online and climbing under my wife's Runner, I found out my stock holes had been welded up and new holes had been drilled. I knew this thing had been wrecked pretty bad because of all the bondo in the doors and roof, but I couldn't find any sign of frame damage anywhere. I was a little freaked out, but figured there was nothing I could do at this point so I welded her on and finished the lift

Re: Chad's 98 4Runner
As I finished up the body lift, I found a set of used 255 KM's on ksl for $120. I used to work for the local tire shop for 8 years prior to my current job so I have really good connections there. Caught the next appointment they had and headed up.
I was pretty nervous on how the alignment would look on the rack. Surprisingly, everything looked great for the most part. The rear end was kicked to one side about an inch as I had suspected after finding that panhard mount had been modified. I did a half assed alignment, because I figured I would order an adjustable panhard soon and come back to fine tune the alignment. As I mounted the tires I had just bought, I found out one of them had a sidewall gouge. Thought I got a pretty good deal on them, should've known better. I figured what the hell and just stuffed a tube in it. Back to looking for a different set of rubbers. I figured I would run the tube till it gave me trouble. I have a full size spare and figured I wouldn't put too many miles on.

Re: Chad's 98 4Runner
I had a pretty rough trip up wheeling and came back with a broken detent cable, and leaking front transfer case output shaft seal. While I was in there I replaced the throttle cable as well and dropped a trans-go shift kit in it.
After a few months of searching for a new set of tires I scored big time! 4 brand spanking new 255 KM2's for $575. Picked them up and was waiting for either winter or my tube to start giving me problems. I was extremely surprised how long that tube held up. I probably put close to 3000 miles on it with half of them aired down to 15 lbs.
Next day:

Re: Chad's 98 4Runner
...And finally what I'm working on now:
4xInnovation sliders and a tranny cooler. I figured that the stock radiator is a ticking time bomb with 250k miles on it. I had to go all out and buy a tranny cooler with a fan, because I like to complicate things. I ended up buying this unit:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CIGEA0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Once I received it, I found out it's going to take a lot more work to get it installed than what I was anticipating. I also found out that the fan is a puller fan and not a pusher. I really don't know how well it will work, but I'm excited to find out. I hope to have it all back together by this coming weekend so I have time for corrections that might need to happen before the drive down south.

That's tough. I never know how big a muffin to put on my truck.
Did you DD with that tube in there? I have a perfectly good KM1 I can't use on the Ford because of a little hole right at the edge of the tread. I thought about tubing it but figured that would destroy the balance and be undriveable on the freeway.

Yea, I even drove it down to Salt Lake a couple times. It would still be going strong if it wasn't for all the airing down. I'm pretty sure it's not legal to be running tubes in street tires, as I know I want supposed to pass safety. To tell you the truth, it drove a lot smoother with those wore out KM's than it does with these new KM2's. I need to rotate them and see if that gets rid of my shimmy.

This board will cut off photos linked with the IMG tag if the pic is too big. If it bugs you, use the Host Image button in the tool bar, then when you link to the hosted image it will resize it for you.

If they are not cut off when you look at them, I'll just leave it. I know they aren't on my computer, but they are on my phone.
