Anybody running 255's on their 3rd gen with stock rims? I want some pics!

Here's 255/85s on my 1st gen, does it count if they're 3rd gen wheels?
Re: Pics of 255 85 16's on stock rims
Those are the rims I wanted pictures of! Now I just want to see them on a 3rd gen. I'm really on the fence about running 255's on stock rims or going to a 285 on an aftermarket rim. I would prefer to stay as low budget as possible, so staying with the stock rim would be awesome! I just don't want my 4runner to look ridiculous being a limited with fender flares. They do look awesome on that 1st gen!

Are you running spacers? If not you will want the 255s. When I put 285s on my stock wheels (the wheels that Kevin had on his 1st gen now) the rubbed the a frame and I had to add spacers.

I just bought the runner, it's bone stock as of right now. I'm just trying to lay things out. I was planning on running the Toytec Boss lift. I don't know that I would like 285"s on stock width rims. If I can get away with it looking alright and clearing without spacers, I'll run without. I'm sure it would look fine without spacers if it wasn't a limited with the flares.

Check out the first but of my build thread. I have a bunch of pics of 285s on those rims. They look good, just need spacers.

I've read through your build on RME. Awesome rig by the way!! If you're headed up to Brigham to do some wrenching and need help, send me a pm. The tires that are mounted on the stock rims didn't look like 285's to me, maybe its just the angle or something. My buddy just put some 31's on his stock Toyota rims and they're ballooned like a MO-FO. I would love them in the rocks, but I think the handling on pavement sucks and they don't wear the greatest.

Key me look through them. The wheels I put on after are the exact same width as stock and I have 315s on them now. I may not have put 285s on the stock ones come to think of it.

Interesting, I'll have to do some digging. How were the 285's and stock gearing? I was thinking 4.88"s when I do tires.

285s were great with the 4.10s. I would have gone with 4.88 as well but obviously I had BIGGER plans! Like I said earlier though. Unless you want to go with spacers I wood do the 255s.

When we bought my wife's '99 it had 285/75 KM2s on it. They rubbed like mad on the frame and fender wells even after we put OME coils on it, and with the automatic and 4.30 gears they brought the suck. The 265s I replaced them with aren't much better.
I suspect I'd like them a lot better if it was a five speed. The a340 series transmissions are crap.
Re: Pics of 255 85 16's on stock rims
Yea, I'm lazy. The turbo I had was the biggest turd with the auto. It made the biggest improvement in power when I swapped in the 5-speed, but I wish I would've stuck with the auto and figured out the weird shift problem.
I've heard lots of people talk crap on the auto that's behind the 3.4. It took a little bit to get used to it, but now I love it! I would take it over the manual any day. The only two things I liked the manual for were driving high speed through a canyon and towing. The five minutes of stop and go traffic I deal with daily makes the auto a beautiful thing.

The auto trans isn't crap it's just a power sucker... I'm waiting to go to 4.88s before I make the move to 255/85s.

Lol, yea I'm shooting for 4.88's too. I just hope I can still do 75 without it screaming. I guess it would just push me to get bigger tires, right?

I don't know the ratios for your trans, but I've had 5.29s with 33s in my '86 (auto) and now my '85 (manual), and the RPMs are high but I wouldn't say screaming.

I didn't realize you had these size tires... they look kinda small on the runner but on a Jeep they look pretty big. that's the size I want. how did or do you like them Kevin?

Re: Pics of 255 85 16's on stock rims
I like them. Less rolling weight and turning resistance makes for less strain on the motor and suspension/steering components than a 285/75, and I get a fraction more axle clearance. The KM2s are as quiet as some AT tires I've owned and I don't notice a significant MPG hit, so that's nice (but that might be the gears). The big downside is a smaller footprint, which I might regret if I ever get into deep snow or sand that requires flotation instead of digging.
The other thing is, the only tires that come in 255/85 are mud terrain treads. Those Grands take a lot of lift to clear tires, Mike, and for how you're going to use the truck, you might be better served by an all terrain tread anyway - have you considered 235/85r16? That size has lots of AT treads available (Duratracs, for one), and you wouldn't have to lift as high to clear them.

Copper does make their ST in this size, but I don't like the look of it. It's the most mild tire I could find in this size

thanks for the input Kevin. I realized that's kind of a hard size to find now. it actually has a 2" lift on it now, but I'm looking into a 3.5" and maybe a .5" spacer if necessary. I'd be happy with some 32's. like a 265/75R16 is what I'm looking at now.
funny that 31's looked small on my second gen but I have a Cherokee at the shop here with 31" km2's and a lift. I thought they were 33's.
