U4WDA ALERT!

Post by Ty on Thu Nov 21, 2013 6:11 pm

So I had a good long conversation today with a friend on the inside at U4WDA.

As of the current state of the club he recommends staying away. The current organization and vision of the club is less desirable. The main focus at this time he feels is more trail rides and raffles.

I will post some of the conversation tonight when I'm at a computer.

This info is from a very credible member of the 4x4 community. He recommends if you are wanting to join a land use group (required for DesertRunners membership) go to Tread Lightly.

He isa Master Trainer at Tread Lightly and said if we are interested he can do some Tread Lightly trainings for us.

Watch for more on this topic tonight!

So the conversation began with texting my source about the requirements for our club to become a U4WDA sanctioned club.  Here is the entire dialog.

Source in RED Like I said this is a VERY reliable source. He was recently on the U4 bod.

Hey Source,

I don't know how involved you are still with U4WDA, but I thought you may still be able to answer my question.  I emailed someone the other day about information on the requirements to make a club a U4WDA sanctioned club.  I have not heard back and thought maybe you might have a little insight on this.  Let me know if you do.  If not I will just keep waiting for a reply!

"You'll be waiting a while.  Stuff like this is why I am off in the shadows now. U4WDA has slowly been turning into a non-functioning entity.  But to answer your question the process used to be that you signed up as a club, which I think was $50, and all the members signed up as individual members.  Something like that.  Been a while."

"sounds like I may have wasted my $10 bucks last week huh?  I hope they can pull things together."

"You might have.  I haven't seen any real plan on the U4WDA forum.  Bums me out, too. We had a good bit of momentum for a while."

Sad Sad Sad

"Hahaha I know the feeling"

"I should have gone with Tread Lightly!  What are the other local organizations like?"

"There really aren't any.  USA-ALL is a waste of time."

"What can be done to right the ship at U4WDA?"

"Not much, with Matt at the helm.  It's a big club.  They need to proceed with a plan.  Mine was to get back to our roots and start some educational plans, but no one wanted to do it.  They all want to have trail rides and raffles."

"With our new club we have been encouraging our members to join a land use organization.  Should we point them toward Tread Lightly and BRC?  Sounds like that may be a better use of our resources anyhow."

"Tread Lightly is EXCELLENT.  I'm a Master Trainer, WooHoo."

"We may be in contact with you to get some training done!  Looks like thats the way to go!"

Right on!  Thats the whole point of what U4 should be doing- the mission charter says.Education and stewardship.  Tread Lightly kind of codifies ethics, as an educational service"

"Thats awesome.  I will be joining on payday!!"

After that was just a little friendly conversation about U4 not being worth the effort and about setting up some training's from Tread Lightly.

Basically my point to this post is DON"T waste your $10 on U4WDA.  If you already have lets contact them and start lighting fires under them.

That's unfortunate to hear, but good to know.

I'm trying to figure out who you were talking to that's a TL master trainer and used to be a bigwig in U4WDA.  I would have said Kurt but the parts you quoted don't sound like Kurt.

I emailed U4WDA back in October.  I finally heard back from somebody a couple days ago:
My name is Matt Westrich, President of the Utah 4-Wheel Drive Association. Sorry it took me this long to get back to you, I was in Vegas working on land use issues  at SEMA.
I glad you are starting a new club, if you need any assistance we can help with.
Now for your questions. A lot of clubs have in their bylaws that they are members of U4. Membership dues for a club that joins it members to U4 are charged $10.00 per membership unit. We inform you of different activities around the state and sometimes outside Utah like Johnson Valley. we like clubs to participate as much as possible. If you a service project, we like a report to hopefully add to our annual magazine.
That's not encouraging.  That's not the response of an active organization with a purpose.  That basically says, "yeah, send us some money and then let us know if you do anything cool so we can take credit".

I'm not seeing an upside to tying our club to U4WDA right now - I don't mind supporting the org with a couple dollars a year, but until there's some sort of critical mass of people wanting to fix U4WDA, I don't see the point in hitching our train to theirs.  I'm not superexcited about Tread Lightly either, though.  I don't think it's being promoted enough, and when I tried to organize a class for trainers a while back I got blown off.  BRC is a nationwide organization, which is cool, but it seems like most of their energy goes to California issues and keeping ATV/sidexside trails open, and frankly I'm tired of ATVs and SXSs.  Then there's USA-ALL, but they're practically dead as far as I know.

So I'm not sure what's to be done except what we're already doing - wheel responsibly and be the best example we can.

Kevin said he couldn't figure out who I was talking to. I just gave him a clue.
