It's a 1970-something Appleby.  The canvas needs cleaned and a couple small patches, and the tub is going to need some work.  But there's no rust, no mold, no major defects at all, and best of all it only weighs 400 pounds, so the Bastard should be able to haul it around without suffering a heart attack.

It'll look like this when I'm finished restoring it:

Once it's functional again, it'll get sliders, a longer tongue with more storage, a beefier axle, and 33s.  Then maybe an articulating hitch.  Or maybe not, I don't know what kind of trails I'll be comfortable dragging it through yet.

I've always thought it would be sweet to have a tent trailer I could drag anywhere with me. I know as soon as I get one that my wife will give up on tent camping though.

Oh, I don't even know.  Rears are probably too long and heavy, even if I take a set of fronts down to two leaves that might be too stiff.

Maybe I'll just link it and use coils.  A non-steering three link shouldn't be too hard to set up, right?

After my lift I'll give you my stock springs if you want to link it. They should give plenty of clearance to that small of a trailer

I don't have anything to give you, but it's a cool project!

Wait! I've got a couple of semi-functioning t-cases if you need one!

I don't think the trailer will need low range.  You should give me your compressor instead so I can keep one on the trailer.

When I bought the trailer, we set it up in the middle of that last snow storm, and put it away with snow still on it.  I got it out to let it dry, and though it had been sitting in a puddle of melted snow and ice in the tub I found that none of it had soaked through the canvas - except for the pinholes and ripped screen, it's in pretty good shape.  I was planning on waterproofing it before I used it, but I think I don't need to now.

I found a snazzy plug-in trailer harness at Autozone, no hacked taillight wiring for me!  That's awesome, because I'm way lazy with wiring and that was just asking for trouble.  I still need to go through the trailer wiring and then it'll be legal to pull.

Then I can start fixing the tub.  The hinges on both panels are loose and need re-riveted, and the tub itself is torn at two places where it looks like the panel pulled on it.  I think I'm going to get some aluminum square tube and box out the inside of the tub to reinforce the entire thing.  Gotta find somebody who welds aluminum.

You don't weld aluminum like you fix radiators, do you?  Very Happy

I'll be touch.  I need to measure out how much tube I need first and such.

I tossed around a couple ideas for repairing the damaged tub.  I originally thought about getting some aluminum square tube and framing out the inside, then I though about getting some L bracket and just reinforcing the top rail.  I finally decided to just carve out some aluminum patches and rivet them in and go from there.  I spent most of Sunday messing around with aluminum scrap, learning the best way to bend it to shape without a brake (or a break!  This stuff I have is brittle).  Once I got a couple splices into the shapes I liked, I grabbed a cheapo rivet gun from Lowes and went to town.

The damage - this happened when one of the previous owners opened the lid on this side without putting the supporting legs on first.  The weight of the lid ripped out the thin aluminum at each corner:

Whoever did it tried to repair one corner but did a craptastic job - I'm not sure what this was supposed to accomplish, it only bolted in on one side of the tear!

Because I don't have enough projects already... 20131201_102150_zps7ac8c371

I had to bend two plates into a J shape to match the lines of the tub, and I riveted them inside where they won't be seen.  Then I riveted some extra bracing where the tub sides meet the front and rear walls, which will hopefully add some extra support.  It looks a little frankensteinish, but it should hold together.

The rear:

Because I don't have enough projects already... 20131202_135830_zps692e3dca

The front:

Because I don't have enough projects already... 20131202_135855_zpsfa313357

Since I took the pics I've riveted the piano hinge back on which secures the inside rail of the splice, so all I need to do is replace the lid on that side and that part will be done.  The lid on the other side was dropped too, but it ripped out the wooden plywood lid instead of tearing the aluminum.  Whoever did that tried to bolt metal plates on over the ripped wood but they're pulling out, so I've got to get those plates off and see how bad the damage is.  I may just replace the entire plywood portion of the lid.  Then I can put the canvas back up and start fixing pinholes and broken zippers and torn mosquito mesh.  That'll all have to wait until this round of snow clears though, because no garage. Sad

I hope to have this bad boy ready for FYTO.  I really don't want to sleep on the ground out there!
