Does your 3.4 whine?

Post by Kevin on Fri Jun 21, 2013 12:03 pm

Nicole's 3.4 has an RPM dependant whine.  It sounds like a pulley, but it only does it when the truck is in gear, and it comes and goes.  I've ruled out the AC, alternator, and power steering pump.  Any ideas?

I don't think mine has a whine, it does idle a bit rough.  I take a listen when I get back in town tomorrow.  Does it sound like it's coming from the engine bay or more towards the tranny (Since you say it does it in gear)?

I haven't had the wife put it in gear while I'm under it yet, but from the cab it sounds like a motor noise.

I have a whine from the tranny. Started about a year ago and gonna have to replace the tranny pretty soon, though no noticeable effects. I think it's from the torque convertor, because there is a very high pitched whine right before it shifts up. Though it also seems pretty dependent on the tranny oil temperature.

Maybe that's it? Otherwise I haven't heard my engine whine, unless you count the cold air intake roaring (what a pain in the ass).

My 3.4 does not whine, BUT my clutch does a little.  I don't know how the auto works but my clutch whine was dependent on RPMs.  It turned out to be the pilot bearing in the clutch!!  Hope this helps.
